Yomari is a popular Newari sweet dish prepaed from rice flour filled with chaku or khuwa, specially prepared during yomari punhi. Shaped like a pointed fish or fig, Yomari is steamed and eaten warm. It is specially made during the Yomari Punhi festival, which celebrates the end of the rice harvest and is believed to bring good luck and prosperity. Yomari is not just a food, it is a symbol of happiness, togetherness, and Newar culture.

Prepare the dough

  1. In a bowl, take rice flour.
  2. Gradually add warm water and knead until smooth and soft dough forms.
  3. Cover it and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.

Prepare the fillings

  1. In a pan, melt chaku gently on low heat until soft.
  2. Add roasted sesame seeds. Mix well and let cool slightly.
  3. Let it cook on low heat for a minute.
  4. Cover the pan with a lid and cook until the crepe is cooked through.

Shape the yomari

  1. Take a small ball of dough. Flatten it with your fingers into a small cup shape.
  2. Add a spoonful of filling in the center.
  3. Gently close the edges and shape into a pointed, fig-like dumpling.

Steam yomari

  1. Place the yomari in a steamer(or vessel used for steaming momo).
  2. Steam for about 20-25 minutes until cooked through.
  3. GEnjoy warm Yomari, sweet, soft, and full of flavor!
